The long line of TR-badged Triumph sports cars stretches back to the TR2 of the early 1950s and boasts some of the most charismatic sporting machines among its family. For many the ultimate TR7 was the runt of the litter, a quirky, unappealing product of the depressing British Leyland years of the 70s.

Certainly the TR7 was controversially styled: its lines were penned by Harris Mann (who also has the Austin Allegro to his credit). Build quality was never up to much: they tended to break down and catch fire, and the fixed-head model in particular had very little appeal. Yet there is much to lie said in favor of the maligned TR7. It sold in greater quantity than any other TR model, and in due course it became a rather attractive sports car, at least in convertible form.

The original plan had been lo make a drop-top TR7, but concerns about American legislation possibly banning open cars led Triumph to launch the new sport scar in fixed-head form only in 1975. For lovers of the machismo of Triumph TR straight-six power disappointment lurked, for British Leyland opted to fit a mere four cylinder engine (the 105bhp Dolomite 1850 unit), driving through a Morris Marina four-speed gearbox. It was frankly not a sporting package at all.

Despite this, export sales went pretty well, especially in America (British sales did not begin until May 1976). Some of the criticisms were addressed with the adoption of a Rover SD1 five-speed gearbox in 1976 and lowered suspension the following year. But it was not until the drop-top model was added in 1979 that the TR7 turned the corner and became a real sports car.

Still there was not enough power for many tastes. Triumph fitted its fine twin-cam Dolomite Sprint engine to its rally cars, but road cars were denied this option. Instead a stunning Rover V-eight-powered version was offered for export only, dubbed the TR8. This model was actually quite rare (only 2,497 were made) and soon private owners were doing their own V-eight installations on TR7s, a fad that assumed epidemic proportions since the performance was so much better: 137bhp in "soft" tune meant 120mpli (193kpli) instead of100 mph (177kpli) and 0-60 mph(0—96kph) in 8.4 seconds. These figures could be greatly enhanced by tuning the V-eight engine to even higher levels.

Production finally ended in 1981, and few enthusiasts mourned the death of the TR7; far more sad for them was that this event marked the demise of the great Triumph sports car. The TR7 was a car that never fulfilled its potential but which has recently started to gain a following. Its distinctive style and bargain prices make it a surprisingly attractive sports car and a sure-fire candidate for future classic status.
