'Humvee' after its initials HMMWV which stood for High Mobility Multi-purpose
Wheeled Vehicle, this vehicle debuted in 1980. It had been designed in
just 11 months and had its thorough testing in the Nevada desert. The
US Army thought it very impressive and ordered 55,000 within a couple
of years But it wasn't until the much-televised Gulf War of 1991 that
the public demanded a road version. Starting with a small-block Chevy
engine, the Humvee soon got GM's new-for_1994 378 ci (6.4-litre) turbo-diesel
V8. The car was designed for mintaryuse so weight was not an issue, hence
there's a massive ladder-style chassis. Raised independent suspension
was utilized to give plenty of travel and ground clearance while four-wheel
drive was standard with a four-speed auto transmitting drive to a' two-speed
transfer case and centre differential.
