The 1961 407, with its Canadian-built Chrysler 5.2-litre engine, was the first V8 Bristol, instantly catapulting the big four-seater into the 130 mph (209 kph) class with standing quarter-mile times equal to the contemporary two-pliis-two Ferrari. Gone was the delicate two-litre six, and the four-speed Bristol gearbox was replaced by a Chrysler Torqucflite automatic with flashy push-button selection and seamless gear changes. Though the classic Bristol chassis remained, the front suspension was new, coils supplanting the transverse leaf. Gone too was that lovely rack-and-pinion steering, replaced by a Marles worm-type unit which, together with the sheer weight of the engine, conspired to make the 407 less nimble than its thoroughbred predecessors.

The cars were improved through the 1960s. The 408 had the same 5.2 Chrysler engine but new front-end styling and select-a-ride dampers. The 409, from 1965 on, had rounded comers on the grille, power steering and better brakes. The 410 of 1968 had smaller wheels, floor-shift for automatic gearbox and twin-circuit brakes.

The 1969 411 had lower ride-height with clipped fins, less bright work and a 6.2-litre engine. Series 2 (1970) had auto self-levelling. Series 3 (1972) entirely new front-end styling with twin 7-in (17.8cm) liglits. Series 4 (1973) had a 6.6-lilrc engine, giving 330bbp. Series 5411 (1975) had a black grille, stiffer chassis and improved cooling. 411s could pull 140 mph (225 kph).

All offered drawing-room luxury with muscular performance. Later versions' superb power steering made them remarkably agile for size. Tlie ride was excellent, build quality superb. The relatively narrow build meant that, in town, drivers coidd thread through gaps that would stop most luxury cars and all from a commanding driving position in big, armchair scats.

That the little-known Bristol marque survived into the 90s is an achievement itself. Rivals sucli as Aston and Jensen faced liquidation and disaster in tlie 70s and 80s as Bristol plodded on by staying small (boss Tony Crook has never planned to make more than 150 cars a year) and satisfying a small, loyal clientele.
