a performance package on the Camaro, while the RS was a luxury package.
Together, they made a formidable machine, and in 396 ci (6.4-litre) form,
as in this example, it was about as good as the Camaro could get. The
1968 model had changed little in the looks from the first version, but
had styling differences such as the loss of the window vents in favour
of GM's new Astro ventilation system, plus hidden headlights in the front
grille. Mechanically it had staggered shocks and multi-leaf rear springs
to control wheel hop. Ordering the SS option gave your car heavy-duty
suspension, a 285 bhp (213 kW) 350 ci (5.7-litre) V8, a nose striped and
hood emblems. The 396 ci (6.4-litre) big-block V8 was a separate option.
Also a good idea were the 7 x 14 inch (178 x 356mm) rims which aided traction.
The 325 bhp (242 kW) output was just one of three options with the 396.
