Corvette was due to be debuted in 1997, so Chevrolet wanted to say farewell
to the fourth-generation car in style. Designers and engineers collaborated
and came up with the 1996 Grand Sport, which was a nod to the 1960s' Grand
Sport race cars which had been successful in SCCA racing. The striped
paint was just part of the deal, as the car had many upgrades. On the
suspension there were thicker anti-roll bars, plus stiffer springs and
shocks to improve handling. Special arch extensions were put on the rear
to house larger 315/35 tyres, which were much needed with the new power
on tap. The 405 bhp (302 kW) LT5 engine was to be used, but Chevrolet
had axed it the previous year, so engineers fitted the 350 ci (5.7-litre)
LT4 and hotted it up via modified pistons, larger valves, modified cylinder
heads, a high-lift camshaft and roller rockers.
