Impala had everything in 1959. The outrageous fins, plenty of horsepower
and luxurious extras. It didn't matter so much about the handling of the
car to designers - the Impala was more about style so it only had a basic
separate chassis with double wishbones up front and a coil sprung live
rear axle. It was available with a number of powerplants, from a straight-six
right up to the 348 ci (5.7-litre). Stylists worked hard to get the car
long and low and lose the earlier Chevys' upright stance, then gave owners
an options list with which to personalise their vehicles. The car shown
came with every one it seems, having side skirts, spot lights, continental
kit, fender guards, remote trunk release, cruise control, air-conditioning
and power everything. Inside it can carry six and due to its custom-friendly
nature, it's been the model of choice for many lowrider fans.
