a successful model after a trio of successes from 1955 to 1957 was no
easy task, but Chevrolet were up to it with their 1958 Impala. This was
the first time any Chevy had used the Impala name, and it supplemented
the regular Bel Air, Biscayne and Delray models. Designers gave the new
car a longer, lower look which required a new chassis of X-frame design,
with the main rails joined in the middle. Because of the lack of connection
to the body sides, more mounting points were needed to the body elsewhere,
and this improved structural rigidity. The car ran a new W-Series small-block
which was initially designed for light truck duty. It was compact and
at first made 250 bhp (186 kW), though when fitted with theTri-Power option
could acheive 315 bhp (235 kW). Optional was air suspension with rubber
bellows replacing the springs, plus an on-board air compressor.
