Cisitalia was founded in 1946 by racing driver and businessman Piero Dusio. His first project, for which he called on the services of Fiat engineers Giacosa and Savonuzzi, was a single-seater racing car with Topolino front suspension and tlie four-cylinder engine from the Balilla. This was followed in 1948 by the 202 coupe using essentially the same ingredients but with a memorable full-width bodv on a round-tube frame by Pininfarina. This was a seminal moment in post-war styling, the coupe having its bonnet lower than the front wings, headlights blended into the wings (rather than free standing) and smoothly sweeping, simple lines. Farina explored these themes on other chassis but never again to such remarkable effect. The New York Museum of Modern Art has, since 1951, kept a Farina-bodied Cisitalia as an example of "sculpture in movement". Vignale, Frua and Stabilmenti rarina, as well as Pininfarina again, designed variants, thanks to slippery aerodynamics, the Cisitalia could achieve 102 mph (164 kph) on just 50 blip 50 bhp from a tweaked Fiat 1100 engine.

Competition-tuned variants had Top speed 105 mph (168 kph) up to 120 mph (193 kph) capability.
As early as 1949, Cisitalia was facing bankruptcy thanks to overambitious plans for a Porsche-designed Grand Prix car. Dusio upped sticks to Argentina, but the 202 continued in production until 1952. The marque survived until 1965 under the control of Dusio's creditors but was never to regain the eminence it achieved with the classic 202 coupe. Today these cars are highly sought after.
