In the 1960s, Japan built its credibility as a sport scar maker with cars like the Honda S800 and the Toyota 2000GT. What it lacked was a high-volume market-leader to sell to the Americans, a car that could step into the shoes of the Austin Healey 3000 whose days were numbered and challenge the aging E-Type Jaguar and Triu mph TR in this big, profitable market.

Into the fray, in 1969, stepped the Datsun 240Z, the best-selling sport scar of the 1970s. What the badge lacked in romance and cachet, the 240Z more than made up for with its well-balanced muscular lines, designed by Albrecht Goertz, father of the beautiful BMW 507. With its long bonnet, recessed lights and flowing, tense rear haunches, the Z clearly took styling cues from the fixed-head E-Type Jaguar; yet it was pure and elegant enough, apart from unattractive wheel trims — a typical weakness of Japanese cars — to have its own appeal. A well-equipped two-seater with a rear hatchback, the 240Z held few surprises under the skin, yet lacked for nothing: the engine was a smooth and punchy straight six, making 151 bhp from 2393cc. Power went via a five-speed gearbox to a well-sorted strut-and-wishbone rear end. There were struts at the front, too. Precise rack-and-pinion took care of the steering. Butch and meaty in character — not unlike the big Healey - the 240Z was a far superior car even if never offered as a drop head. For the same price, in America, as Triu mph's abysmal GT6, the customer received a car that handled superbly, if traditionally, and topped 125 mph (201 kph) with ease. It even sounded the part, with a gruff straight-six growl that was pure machismo.

Datsun sold 150,076 before the 260Z took over in 1975. Seeking more refinement, Datsun made the 260 a softer, less aggressive car and, inevitably, a heavier, slower one. Nevertheless, it was what the public, certainly the American public, wanted. Sales continued to climb. Automatics and a two-plus-two, longer-wheelbase version broadened the Z's appeal, though today's purist enthusiasts turn their noses up at this uglier variant.

With the 280ZX, Datsun finally lost the plot altogether. This unattractive parody of the purebred original was unworthy of the name. A good 240Z is a rare find today. Rust got many.
