was shown as a concept in 1989 at the Detroit Motor Show and the public's
hunger for it meant one was pacing the Indy 500 in 1991. The following
year the RT/10 version was on sale, with buyers queuing up. Then Chrysler
repeated the process with a Viper GTS coupe concept, and again it was
well received. The first production GTS coupe appeared in 1996 and addressed
many of the roadster's shortcomings. Every body panel was new, as was
the engine up to a point, and it had been re-cast in aluminum and featured
many new components. Power was up, but overall weight was down by over
40 lb (18 kg), thanks to composite bodywork and all-aluminum suspension.
The GTS was practical too because of the rear window hatch and generous
trunk space. The 11 x l7-inch (279 x432 mm) rims out back could just about
cope with the incredible torque.
