When it came to replacing the noble and long-running 328, Ferrari was forced by tougher crash regulations to expand the size of its new entry-level car, called the 348tb. It also decided to fit the familiar V-eight engine longitudinally rather than transversely as before; the overall length was greater but the engine could now be sited a full 5in (12.7cm) lower down in the chassis.

The lower centre of gravity and stiffer chassis transformed the mid-engine Ferrari's handling from merely superb to deeply impressive. On-the-limit manoeuvres could be accomplished without fear of sudden tail-end break-away, yet it was at all times thrillingly rewarding to drive.

The engine was expanded to 3.4 liters and almost 300 bhp, allowing for the expected levels of Ferrari forward thrust. Although the engine pointed front-to-rear, the gearbox was mounted transversely - hence the "t" in the name. Naturally, Pininfarina was called upon to shape the 348 and it did another superb job. Testarossa-style side strakes endowed the otherwise subtle bodywork with a distinctly Ferrari character. A more spacious interior made life much easier, too. As well as the fixed-head tb, there was also a ts model with a removable targa roof and a full Spider soft-top. In 1994, the 348 was updated to become the F355. At the heart of the newcomer was an expanded quad-cam five-valves-per-cylinder 3.5-litre V-eight. With up to 381 bhp on tap, this supremely character power-plant delivered even more blistering performance: 183 mph (0-294 kph) top speed and 0-60 mph (0-96 kph) in 4.8 seconds. In-gear acceleration was optimized by a six-speed gearbox.
