The immortal Boxer was Ferrari's first attempt at a flagship mid-engine model, though its history can be traced back to the 250LM Road Berlinetta, a road version of the 250LM racer, while some see the weird three-seater, centrally steered 365P show car of 1966 as its true spiritual father.

It was not until 1968, with the beautiful P6 show car, that Ferrari's favored couturier Pininfarina really began to think aloud — and clearly — about the swoopy wedge profile of Maranello's super car for the 70s, built to challenge the Lamborghini Miura and take over from the front-engine Daytona. Pininfarina's stylists started with a "big Dino" look, then flirted with the radical wedge influence of the 512 Modulo and futuristic 512S Berlinetta. Eventually, they settled on the elegant simplicity of the final production car, announced, prematurely, at Turin in 1971: production did not actually begin until 1973.

Under the big alloy engine cover was a new aluminum 4.4-litre four-cam flat-twelve engine, descended from the 1500c 512 Formula 1 cars of 1960. Breathing through four triple-choke (throat) Weber carburetors, it was for many the best engine in production, combining searing punch with pin-sharp throttle response and spine-tingling sound effects. Top speed was quoted as 188 mph (302 kph) — though no independent source confirmed it -0-60 mph (0-96 kph) came up in 5.2 seconds.

To save space, the five-speed transaxle was lucked up under the engine, alongside the sump, all hung in an exotic multi-tube frame with a central steel monocoque around the passenger cell. Though the low-slung flat "boxer" configuration had the advantage of a low centre of gravity and better aerodynamics, the 365GT 4BB had a definite rear weight bias, with 56 per cent of its total weight over the rear wheels. At the limit, the handling could be a little ragged, and the Boxer certainly never had the cornering finesse of its arch rival, the Lamborghini Countach. The interior was finished in high-quality leather, and most cars came with air conditioning.

The five-liter 512 BB took over in 1976: its bigger bore engine, now with dry-sump lubrication, produced no extra power but 10 per cent more torque. A 512 could be spotted by its front spoiler, wider rear tires, side air vents to cool the rear brakes, differently vented engine lid and four tail lights, not six.

The final incarnation of the Boxer was the 512i BB with Bosch K-Jetronic injection, which hacked an alarming 20 bhp off the quoted power output but improved tractability and emissions. Production ended in 1984, making way for the controversially styled Testarossa. Ferrari built 2323 Boxers: 387 of the 365 model, 929 of the 512 and 1007 of the 512i.
