Although the 206/246 Dino was never to wear a Ferrari badge (Enzo tried to market it as a separate marque) it was, in every respect other than the number of cylinders, a "proper" Ferrari. A 140 mph (225 kph) car with superb handling and a stunningly beautiful shape - one of Pininfarina's finest moments — it was for many the first step on the ladder of Ferrari ownership.

To understand the 206/246 Dino you have to understand the Fiat Dinos, the first fruit of Ferrari's liaison with Fiat and the first road car to bear the name of Enzo Ferrari's much-missed son and heir. A conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive monocoque design — made as a Pininfarina Spider and a low-key Berlonc coupe — it had its genesis in the 1967 1.6-litre Formula 2 racing regulations. Ferrari's Dino V-six engine dating from the mid-1950s was ideal for the job, but the rules stipulated a 500-off, production-based block. Ferrari didn't have the capacity, whereas producing 500 cars was a mere sneeze to Fiat. Enter the Fiat Dino, powered by a production version of Ferrari's quad-cam V-six, first as an all-alloy two-liter, later a 2.4-litre with an iron block. The ruse allowed Ferrari to qualify its engine for F2 racing, and for Fiat this was something of a prenuptial courtship before the eventual marriage of the two companies in 1969. The alloy-bodied two-liter Dino 206 arrived in 1968 with 180 bhp and was powered by the same 65-degree V-six engine as in the Fiat Dino. The big difference was that this was turned through 90 degrees and mounted transversely behind the two-seat passenger cell, with five-speed gearbox and transaxle. Clothed in alloy by Pininfarina, it handled as well as it looked, but it soon became apparent that, in the face of faster opposition from Porsche, the 206 was underpowered. The 246 was Ferrari's answer, with 195 bhp from a 2418cc iron-blocked version of the V-six with more torque produced lower down. Made as a fixed-head GT and GTS open targa (from 1971), it now had a steel body. Bolt-on alloys, rather than the more attractive centre-locking hubs found on the 206, were another recognition point. Just over 4,000 of the 206/246 were made between 1968 and 1973 before the introduction of the much less attractive two-plus-two Dino 308GT4.
