The Ford Capri of 1969 was the European version of the hugely successful Mustang, a basic four-seater GT sold in endless combinations of engine and trim. Built in Britain and West Germany, the range started with a humble 1.3-litre in-line four as found in the Escort. In Britain there were 1.6 and 2.0-litre V-four models going right up to the three-liter V-six. In Germany there were additional 1.7 and 2.3-litre models. There were enough trim options to send your head reeling: the L was the poverty model, the XL the mid-ranger, with the GT and luxury GXL models at the top of the range. The basic shell and struts with beam rear axle were the same throughout. There were various types of four-speed manual gearbox and, on the bigger-engined versions, an automatic option. All cars had front disc brakes, with drums at the rear, and rack-and-pinion steering power assisted on some of the 3 liter models.

Everything from the 1.6 GT up could do over 100 mph (160 kph), with 117nipl] (189 kph) on offer from the fastest 3.0-litre model, quite a hairy car in its day. Easily the most desirable of the Mid Capris were the RS2600 and 3100 cars: the German-built RS2600 with its Ham Weslake-improved, fuel-injected V-six was a hot homologation special with 150 bhp. The 3100 followed it in 1973, again built to homologate Ford's race Capri of the day with its 400 bhp quad- cam V-six. The British-built road car made do with a Weber carburetor and an over-bored version of the stock V-six, giving a still respectable 148blip. These rare and highly desirable Capris arc not difficult to spot with their fat alloy wheels, sporty quarter bumpers and – on the 3100 - duck tail spoiler.

The MkII Capri of 1974 updated the model with a three-door hatchback body on the same floorpan.The MkIII Capri four years later smartened up the look with four-shot lights and detail improvements. It lived until 1986 when the final 280 Brooklands Limited edition rolled off the German production lines.

Today, early Capris are rare and all of the 3100 - duck-tail spoiler, the more interesting high-performance versions are much sought-after.
