| | FORD COUPE (1940) CAR HISTORYCar review on FORD COUPEFord evolved their separate fender design ever since the
'34 model appeared, but by the 1940 Ford coupe they'd become rounded and
this pretty much steered car design into the next decade. While once proving
affordable and simple transportation for many Americans, the 1940 coupe
went on to be a hot rodders' favorite
, as its Flathead V8 was tuner friendly.
The V8 engine developed as time went on, and when Chevrolet's small-block
appeared in '55 it was an instant hit with hot rodders. This car uses
one sitting in the 40 Coupe's basic rails, strengthened to take Mustang
II front suspension and a 9-inch (229 mm) Ford live rear axle on semi-elliptical
leaf springs. The small-block has been treated to a high-lift camshaft,
modified heads, a dual plane intake manifold, Holley four-barrel carb
and can now do the quarter in 14 seconds while providing cruising family
comfort.
