In Britain in the 1970s a young man's four-wheeled fantasy was a quick Escort, the hot-shot saloon based on the best-selling Ford family runabout.
Leaving the exotic Lotus and Twin-Cam cars on one side, the mass-market hot Escort generation really began with the Mexico (named in honor of Ford's victory in the London to Mexico Rally) and RS2000 models of 1970 and 1973. These were punchy, raucous cars with knockabout rear-wheel-drive handling and distinctive trim, including lad dish quarter bumpers and broad body striping. They were capable of more than 100 mph (160 kph) in their day, and their enormous appeal was bolstered by Ford's endless rallying success with the model.

Technically the cars were straightforward and they performed all the better for it, with MacPherson strut suspension and disc brakes at the front and a live rear axle suspended on leaf springs at the rear. The steel shell was a monocoque which was stiffened on some versions to take the extra power.

The MkII Escort-based RS2000 of 1975 took the concept a stage further, its shovel-nosed styling (the "droop snoot" was a tacked-on piece of polyurethane said to reduce drag by 16 per cent) and up-market interior setting it apart from boll) the lesser family car Escorts and the enthusiast types who bought the original Mkl RS cars.

Not that the Escort had gone soft: with 100 bhp the RS2000 was quicker than ever and just as much fun to drive on a twisty road. Order books were soon bulging, its profile undoubtedly raised by regular rubber-burning television appearances in a British TV show called The Professionals.

Ford boosted its profit margins even more with X-Pack options for boy racers who wanted to go that bit faster.
The MkII Escorts were replaced by front-wheel-drive cars in 1980, the sporty flagship role taken over by the XR3. Totally different in style and engineering it might have been, but in many ways the appeal - purebred boy-racer-was identical.
