In the 1980s, a new breed of super car hit the streets. Manufacturers wanting to muscle in on the prestigious Group B rally scene were forced by the regulations to build a minimum of 200 cars for homologation purposes, which usually meant having to sell some as road-going cars. Many of these beasts, while brutally effective on forest roads, were hopelessly impractical if you had to drive anywhere on public roads.

Ford's Group B effort, the RS200, was certainly effective, but in road form it was also one of the most practical and comfortable of all, having such luxuries as a fully-trimmed cockpit and even provision for a radio. In racing terms, the RS200 never achieved its full potential because, after just one season (1986), the sport's governing body cancelled the Group B category. It was left to private entrants to pick up honors such as the European Rally cross Championship.

The RS200 was conceived as early as 1983 as a bespoke (dedicated) rally machine. Ghia styled the monocoque body shell, which was made of glassfibre and Kevlar over an aluminum honeycomb floor with steel front- and rear-box sections. It looked a good deal prettier than any other Group B car around. It was short and stubby yet had an undeniable presence, mainly thanks to its large tail spoiler and roof-mounted spoiler/air dam. The windscreen derived from the standard production Ford Sierra.

Cosworth provided the engine, a turbocharged, slightly enlarged BDT development of the BDA unit fitted to the Escort RS1700T. It developed 250 bhp in road-going form and could be tuned as high as 450 bhp - or even higher - for competition use.

The four-wheel-drive transmission was unusual in that the magnesium-cased Hewland transaxle was mounted well away from the engine, immediately behind the front differential and effectively between the passengers' legs. This was, incidentally. Ford's first-ever foul-wheel-drive road car.

Because of the car's light weight (just 23151b (1050kg)), it performed superbly. It could reach 60 mph (96kpli) in only six seconds, and lop speed was quoted as 140 mph (225 kph), limited by a disappointing Cd figure of 0.40.

The RS200 was launched at the 1984 Turin Motor Show, but preproduction delays meant that the car did not get its homologation papers until early 1986, by which time the required 200 units had already been built. The demise of Group B meant RS200 production would never resume, although much development was later given lo it to keep it competitive in racing well into the 1990s.
