looked very dated and a way too conservative to be uccessful in the early
1980s. However, Ford was quick to realize it needed a change, so a restyle
was in order for 1983. The new look was dramatic and it stirred up much
interest again. The car looked dynamic and modern, but even so, in the
rapidly changing 1980s, by 1987 it need a facelift. While the car's profile
didn't change, it did get significant upgrades with flush-fitting lights
and side glass, plus all new sheet metal. Ford also introduced two sporty
versions: the 5.0L V8 and the Turbo Coupe. The latter used the former
Mustang SVO unit, a turbo four-cylinder engine with intercooler, forged
pistons and an oil cooler. Riding on the well-established Fox platform,
it used upgraded suspension and 16-inch (406 mm) rims. Through its Borg
Warner T5 the car could attain 15-second quarter-miles.
