| | GREER-BLACK-PRUDHOMME RAIL (1962) CAR HISTORYCar review on GREER-BLACK-PRUDHOMME RAILThis dragster
hails from a time before massive sponsorship and multi-million dollar
championships. It also represents drag racing in its purest form, being
a Top Fuel dragster. This class evolved from stripped-down Model T racers
of the early 1930s, which were little more than a chassis and engine.
As these cars developed, they grew longer wheelbases to make them more
stable at speed, but retained the front engine format into the late 1960s,
before switching to rear engines for safety reasons. The Greer, Black
& Prudhomme car was backed by Tom Greer, the engine was by Keith Black,
and the driving was handled by Don Prudhomme, who later went on to become
World NHRA Top Fuel Champion. The car features a chrome-moly tubular chassis
and a Chrysler Hemi with modified 6/71 GMC supercharger. It did the quarter
in 7.7 seconds at 270 mph (434 km/h).
