With all its reputation for mastery in engine and suspension technology, culminating in a successful Formula 1 racing program, it is perhaps surprising that Honda did not attempt to produce a super car before the NSX. When it did give the go ahead for this risky project, the end result was typically cleaned, business-like and incredibly effective: in essence, the NSX was the most user-friendly of an inherently impractical breed.

Here was a car that bristled with exciting yet pertinent features. Honda recognized the need for light weight, so specified an all-aluminum monocoque body and forged alloy suspension components, which were tested by racer Ayrton Senna. The abilities of the NSX can be judged by the fact that Senna owned several over the years, as did McLaren Fl engineer Gordon Murray.

It was simply the best super car to drive and own, equally capable of idling around town as doing an impression of a Le Mans racer.
The 3.0-liter engine, which was mounted centrally, was a tour de force: four camshafts, 24 valves, variable valve timing and induction, titanium connecting rods, separate coils for each spark plug and an ability to rev to 8300rpm. Its power delivery was smooth, the throttle response was electric, and the noise it emitted ranged from a sweet purr to the scream of a thoroughbred racer. In short, the NSX engine was one of the all-time great power plants.

Its 270 bhp was hugely impressive for a 3.0-litre engine. Even though by super car standards its acceleration was not class-beating, 0-60 mph (0-96 kph) in 5.8 seconds could hardly be described as sluggish.

In handling terms, the NSX was both forgiving and communicative, aided by superb traction control and accurate steering. This was one of the true masters of the art of cornering.

The NSX was the most expensive car Japan had ever made, but its price still undercut rivals like the Ferrari 348. With almost no faults, it was unquestionably the most mature exponent of the super car breed.

Later years saw it improve still further, and in 1997 it got the biggest revamp of its life, with a bigger 3.2-litre engine, six-speed gearbox, variable weight power steering and bigger brakes. It remains one of the most respected cars in the world.
