JAGUAR XJS (1975-1996) CAR HISTORY

Jaguar had charmed the world with its glorious E-Type in 1961, but by 1975 this was looking decidedly outdated and needed a successor. That car was the XJS, a car which had all the ingredients in place to make it perhaps the greatest car in the world: a fabulous V-twelve engine, world-beating suspension and all the prestige of the Jaguar badge.

Somehow the XJS lost the magic that made the E-Type so great. The styling rubbed everyone up the wrong way: traditionalists bemoaned its slab flanks, trapezoidal headlamps and black rubber bumpers and asked what had happened to Jaguar's traditional grille, its chrome and its walnut veneer dashboard. Sports car drivers questioned its curious flying buttress styling and cramped interior. The truth is that, unlike the E-Type, which was designed by one talented professional, the XJS was styled by committee and ended up being a compromise.

Jaguar chose to base the XJS on a shortened version of the XJ12 saloon (sedan) platform, so that it kept its drive train, suspension and brakes intact. The standard transmission was a Borg Warner three-speed automatic, and although a manual gearbox was offered only 352 customers opted for it. Performance was superb for a grand touring four-seater, with a top speed of 150 mph (241kpli) and bustling acceleration.

The interior was based around the XJ saloon parts bin but featured a curious instrument binnacle with inset main and revolving minor gauges on the dash. There was plenty of space in the front seats, but the rear pair was really suitable only for children.

The 5.3-litre V-twelve engine was given better fuel economy and more power in 1981 and re-christened XJS HE (High Efficiency). Now the XJS started to get some of the chrome and wood that had been missing. The range was expanded in 1983 by the addition of a six-cylinder 3.6-litre XJS and a brand-new Cabriolet model, which had rigid targa root panels and a folding rear section and was a strict two-seater. This drop-top model lasted until 1988, when it was replaced by a new top-of-the-range full Convertible V-twelve model with an electric folding roof. A TWR-developed 333 bhp XJR-5 version arrived at the same time.

For 1991, the XJ got a £50 million ($84 million) investment and a new lease of life. The body shell was heavily reworked, especially at the rear-end, and the interior was thoroughly revamped. Another major change was the adoption of the new AJ6 four-liter engine. Within three years this was uprated to AJ16 specification and got an extra 15 bhp, while the venerable old V twelve engine expanded to six liter.

The XJS survived until September 1996, making it the longest-lived Jaguar ever at over 21 years. One measure of its excellence is that its replacement, the XK8, was based on the XJS floor pan.
