used the heritage of the Jeep name when it launched the 1993 Jeep Grand
Cherokee in 1993. It went through little change until 1997, when it was
facelifted and equipped with the 360 ci (5.8-litre) V8. However, it wasn't
changed underneath with a Uni-frame structure which was a steel monocoque,
and Quadra Coil suspension on live front and rear axles, equipped with
anti-roll bars and gas shocks. The new Quadra-Trac 4WD was brilliant,
being an on-demand system with a viscous coupling centre differential
with torque split varyingly between front and rear axles, depending on
conditions. A more rounded body meant the Cherokees had one of the most
aerodynamic shapes of any Sport Utility Vehicle. Also, with its short
overhangs it could approach slopes of 37 degrees or leave them at 30 degrees.
The V8 made the Grand Cherokee a sports car on the road.
