been Ford's premium brand, with a strong luxury bias. When the Mk VIII
came along in 1992 (it remained in production until 1999) it was luxury
to a new level. Using developments from the Mk VII, the new model was
superior and also had swoopy modern looks which meant it could go head-to-head
with the import luxury cars such as Lexus and BMW. It sat on Thunderbird
platform and received much praise for it, but testers also praised the
all-alloy 32-valve Modular engine which, coupled to the new 4R70W automatic
overdrive transmission, made the Mk VIII very swift yet refined. Handling
was accomplished, the car feeling sporty whilst retaining good ride quality
on air springs. The car required a code before the door handle would operate,
then once inside there was a very modern and ergonomic dash layout, full
of gadgets and power extras.
