First seen in 1962, the Elan put Lotus of Hethel, Norfolk on the map as a make of world-class road cars. Central to design was a steel back-bone chassis, fork-shaped with wishbones and coils at the front. Chapman struts and lowers wishbones at the back with centre-lock steel wheels. All gave the car tremendous agility and excellent ride. The steering rack came from Triu mph. Girling disc brakes were used all round.

The Elan's 105 bhp engine had twin chain-driven cams. The block and bottom end came straight from Ford, pre-Heron head iron lump bored out to 1558cc. The four-speed gearbox was from Ford, too.

This powerful, light car innately balanced and voraciously quick, set the standard for the perfect B-roads dicer. Current for 10 years, it spawned a coupe and a bigger two-plus-two sister. Quality and reliability improved all the while.

The 1971 Sprint was the final flowering of the 1962 Elan with a Tony Rudd-developed big-valve engine giving 25 per cent more power - 126 bhp at 6500rpm. Acceleration, always rapid, was now explosive: to put things in perspective, the big-valve Sprint could get to 60 as quickly as a Lamborghini Islero and, in top gear, had the edge on the likes of the 246 Dino and Porsche 911E at up to 80 mph (128 kph). It was a more oil-tight and quieter engine, claimed Lotus, with a less raucous exhaust note than earlier cars. Big-valve Sprints reverted to Weber carbs, and a few had the five-speed Austin Maxi-derived gearbox from the Plus 2.

Elan production ended in 1973 as Lotus tried to move away from its kit-car image - the car had been available in weekend do-it-yourself form from the start - and moved towards more up-market machines like the Elite and the Esprit. Today the spirit of the Elan has been revived in the Elise.
