the Mustang, Mercury launched its own pony car and named it the Cougar.
Underneath it basically a stretched Mustang platform, which in turn was
based on a Falcon, so it held nothing new suspension-wise. The top-rated
Eliminator came in 1969 and use an independent front with double wishbones
and coil springs, plus a live axle rear on leaf springs, with staggered
shocks to limit wheel hop under hard acceleration. It was fast, no matter
what engine choice you made, the Boss 302 or 428 Cobra Jet being the options.
The smaller of the two made 290 bhp (216 kW) while the bigger was rated
at 335 bhp (250 kW) to fool the insurance companies, though it was more
like 410 bhp (305 kW). The 428 could also be ordered with a ram air system,
and if the owner specified the 'Drag Pak', the car would receive an oil
cooler and 4.3:1 axle gears.
