| | OLDSMOBILE HURST/OLDS (1972) CAR HISTORYCar review on OLDSMOBILE HURST/OLDSGeorge Hurst became famous in the 1960s through
his speed shop and in 1968 one of his employees, Jack 'Doc' Watson, built
him a special Oldsmobile 4-4-2. George was convinced the car could be
a sales winner so approached Oldsmobile with the notion of tuning muscle
cars for them. The result was the Hurst/Olds, and in 1972 a convertible
was picked to pace the 56th Indianapolis 500. This was based on the W-30
model which was fitted with the 455 ci (7.4-litre) engine. This had seen
500 lb ft (677 Nm) torque previously, though emissions reduced power for
1972, even with the hood's functional cold-air induction scoops. A special
Hurst shifter allowed manual shifts through the three-speed automatic,
while the suspension used uprated springs and shocks, with front and rear
anti-roll bars, for balanced handling. In typical Oldsmobile luxury, the
hood dropped at the touch of a button.
