out the big gun in 1967 to compete with Pontiac's GTO. The Hemi-powered
GTX was more a luxury vehicle with huge engine than a racer, with the
Hemi engine being de-tuned with a new cam and lower compression (10.25:1)
to improve it at low rpm. Chrysler's torsion bar front end provided a
smooth ride and was assisted by tubular shocks and an anti-roll bar. The
brakes came stock as heavy-duty drums, though 11-inch (279 mm) front disc
upgrades were sensible. The Torqueflite three-speed auto had its shift
points altered to better suit the Hemi's power, but if you wanted manual
there was a four-speed. Inside, the seats were very comfortable and the
dash hinted of what could be achieved with its 150 mph (241 km/h) speedometer.
The GTX was all about speed, because it could easily do the standing quarter-mile
in 13 seconds (12 seconds with racing slicks).
