After the death of Porsche's front-engine models (the 968 and 928), the Stuttgart firm was left with just one model once again, the venerable rear-engine 911. Having passed through such a painful period of front-engine cars, Porsche elected to take a new direction with its first all-new model in 18 years: the Boxster.

What distinguished the new Boxster was its engine position - in the middle of the car, driving the rear wheels. Porsche claimed that "the mid-engine provides ideal driving dynamics” and the world were forced to agree.

The new Boxster was fabulously entertaining to drive, balanced, responsive and surprisingly forgiving. Powered by a brand new 204hhp 2.5-litre six-cylinder "boxer" engine, in the best Porsche tradition, the Boxster was as fast as it was smooth. Porsche claimed a top speed of 149inpb (240kph) and a 0-62mph (0-lOOkpll) time of 6.9 seconds, or slightly less if you ordered the attractive option of the Tiptronic S gearbox, which allowed gear-changes to be made from paddle controls on the steering wheel.

The four-piston mono-block brake caliper system was for the first time lilted to a road-going Porsche, and was claimed to have 100 per cent fade-free characteristics. It enabled the Boxster to pull up short from 62inph (100kph) in just 2.7 seconds.

Perhaps the Boxster's greatest allure lay in its purposeful styling. Boasting the lowest drag coefficient of any car in its class (0.31), it was elegant, smooth and timeless. The striking headlamps were shrouded by durable plastic covers.

An enticing cockpit boasted instruments grouped in an arc, slightly overlapping each other. The electric soft-top could lie lowered in just 12 seconds and stowed underneath a metal cover.

The Boxster undoubtedly represented a serious part of Porsche's future. Priced very competitively to do battle with the Mercedes-Benz SLK and BMW Z3, it also attracted a whole new generation of drivers to the Porsche marque.
