Today, the front-wheel-drive hatchback is the mainstay of the family-car market in Europe, but when Renault introduced its 16 in December 1964, the concept of a five-door saloon was very new. With its rear hatchback door and fold-down rear seats, the 16 was unparalleled when introduced, even if you didn't appreciate the slightly awkward styling.

Front-wheel drive gave it excellent road holding while long-travel, all-independent suspension ensured a soft, absorbent ride on even the roughest of French roads. Disc front brakes were also to its credit, and even on a modest 1470cc the original 55 bhp 16 could touch 90 mph (145 kph). It was an instant hit and had a long production life, finally giving way to the Renault 20 in 1979.

The 16TS of 1968 was a higher-performance 1565cc, 88 bhp version of the car giving 100 mph (160 kph), though the ultimate 16 was the TX of 1973 with power increased to 93 bhp. Five speeds made it an ideal motorway cruiser, while electric front windows were a rare luxury on a family car in the mid-70s. You could spot a TX by its four-headlamp nose and sports wheels.

Enthusiasts are now beginning to rediscover the excellent qualities of this ground-breaking saloon, which is now a rare sight.
