Car review on RENAULT ALPINE GTA/ A610

Launched in 1984, the Renault Alpine GTA was the last of a famous line of rear-engine French sports cars using Renault V-six power in a steel back-bone chassis. Gunning for the Porsche 911 market, it offered superb driver involvement and high levels of grip (despite-the tail-happy layout) but never managed to tempt many buyers away from Porsche.

They were certainly quick cars, particularly in Turbo form, topping 150mph (241kph) and turning in 0-60mph (0-96kph) times in the six-second bracket. Drivers loved the GTA for its feel and responsiveness, yet it was a comfortable, quiet long-distance machine. Despite its exotic looks, it was surprisingly practical, with usable rear seals and rust-free plastic bodywork. The Douvrin V-six engine — straight out of the big Renault 25 - offered no reliability problems either, and the overall quality of the cars was acceptable, if not in the 911's league.

In 1991, the GTA evolved to become the A610 with a few styling tweaks that somehow robbed (lay crisp-edged shape of character but gave it broader showroom appeal: pop-headlights are the quickest way of identifying the new model. The power of the Turbo model was hiked up to 250bhp thanks to a larger 3.0-litre engine, and top speed rose to 165mph (265kph) with no turbo-lag. The double-wishbone suspension was tweaked to cure any hint of the twitchiness suffered by the older model. With the inclusion of power-steering, parking the A610 wasn't such a muscle-building exercise either.

The GTA and A610 Alpines were hailed as classics while still in production, but always lived in the shade of the Porsche 911. Production ended in 1995, with no successor.
