So-called niche cars began to assume tremendous importance in the 1990s. Sales of mainstream models went down while low-production models sold proportionately more. Usually, niche cars were merely cleverly positioned conventional designs, but that is not a description you could apply to Renault's amazing Sport Spider.

The recipe was exciting, and wildly out of the ordinary for a major company like Renault. Here was a car built for one purpose only: pure driving enjoyment. The brief called for a lightweight, mid-engine sports two-seater, which was so pure in its ethos that it made do without a roof.

Indeed, the first Sport Spider made do without even a windscreen. The design team, led by the brilliant Patrick Le Quement, sculpted a radical shape, which incorporated a solid wind deflector where a windscreen might have been. Later on, a version was offered with a windscreen and wiper in place, but you still got no side windows or roof. That didn't seem to matter, because owners got the chance to drive and enjoy a car which had the look and feel of an advanced concept car.

The Sport Spider was equally radical in construction. The chassis was made of lightweight aluminum, which was also extremely rigid. The suspension was by race-inspired, rose (spherical-jointed double wishbones, and the huge vented disc brakes came from the AGIO super car.

For its power, Renault opted to fit the sizzling 150bhp two-liter engine of the Clio Williams. That was sufficient to take it to 62mpb (100 kph) from rest in just 6.9 seconds.

Overall the Sport Spider was incredibly quick, both in a straight line and through corners. At 17401b (790kg), it may not have been as light as a Loins Elise, but it was certainly no heavy weight. It cornered with almost no roll.

The umbrella organization that created this unique car, Renault Sport, also ran a racing series exclusively for the Sport Spider. Race cars got more power (175bhp), so the action was fast, furious and incredibly exciting, and attracted many talented drivers and large viewing audiences.

This was perhaps the main point of the project. Renault knew the Sport- Spider was not going to be a strong seller. It cost much more than rivals like the Lotus Elise and Caterham 21, and it was obviously too impractical to be used on a daily basis. Production volumes (at Renault's Alpine works in Dieppe) were tiny but the publicity gained for Renault's radical design work was huge-and its courage in putting such a machine into production at all was widely applauded.
