Saab — Svenska Aeroplan AB — built its last 96 in 1980, but the roots of this tough, rally-winning saloon can be traced back to 1945 and the 92. A teardrop-shaped aerodynamic saloon with a two-cylinder two-stroke engine driving the front wheels (through a three-speed box with freewheel), the 92 model was current from 1950 to 1956 as Saab began to diversify from its aircraft-making interests. The 93 which followed it had a three-cylinder two-stroke engine, providing up to 55 bhp in twin-carb GT form and improved coil-spring suspension with a conventional dead-beam axle at the rear to cure the once wayward handling.

The definitive Saab 96 was launched in 1960. The most noticeable feature on the outside was its larger wrap-around rear window, while under the bonnet was a bigger 841cc two-stroke giving 38 bhp in standard form. For enthusiasts, there were the 65 bhp Sport and Monte Carlo models with triple carburetors and front disc brakes. Other goodies included a four-speed gearbox and full pressure lubrication, eliminating the need for the usual petrol/oil mix in the fuel. Top speed was a very creditable 90 mph (152 kph), and it was in this form that the car proved such a rally winner in the hands of Erik Carlson.

For those with more utilitarian needs there was the 95 Estate, introduced before the 96 and always using the four- speed gearbox. Saab stuck with the two- stroke until 1968, but by then the V-four engine, bought from Ford of Germany, was selling strongly. It gave Sport and Monte Carlo performance but with much better economy. Good handling and solid build quality were the most endearing qualities of this tough little classic, of which many examples survive to this day.
