Saleen's name well respected on the circuit racing scene, and on the street,
the company decided in 1997 to take an SR Mustang to Le Mans for endurance
racing. The company became a force to be reckoned with and so in 1998
in the US Speedvision World Challenge Series, Saleen, in conjunction with
Tim Allen from 'Home Improvement' (who also drove this car), entered and
dominated with their 1998 Mustang RRR. Using a stripped SN 95, the car
got a tubular spaceframe chassis with double A-arm suspension, Howe springs
and Bilstein shocks The engine was replace with a windsor 351 ci (5,7-litre),
and on to this went GT40 aluminum heads to give 10:1 compression, and
a Holley 600cfm carburettor. Carbon-fibre was used or the doors trunk
lid, hood, fenders and nose. A tough Jerico gearbox handled the power
and helped Saleen win the manufacturer's trophy in 1998.
