Twelve years after the launch of the mid-engine Fiat Xl/9, Toyota came up with [he first credible rival, the MR2, in 1984. Many expensive and exotic cars used the layout, but on affordable sports cars it had previously been the exclusive province of Fiat and, perhaps, the Pontiac Fiero in America.

MR2 stood for Midships Recreational 2-seater. By plundering the corporate parts bin Toyota created a good-value, sure-fire winner. It had a smooth, responsive twin-cam engine matched to immaculate mid-engine poise, a combination nobody could touch in the affordable sports car arena. If li'aclitioualisis were suspicious of the slightly bland angular styling — not to mention Toyota's questionable pedigree as a maker of exciting cars — then one drive around the block in the 120mph (193kph), 30mpg (48kpg) MR2 would almost certainly win them over.

Without doubt this was a very special car, justifying its reputation as a "mini-Ferrari". To keep its appeal broad Toyota made sure the MR2 rode like a saloon (sedan), was acceptably quiet and had a saloon-car driving position, not a low-slung sporty one that might have been off-putting. About the only black mark was the lack of cockpit space.

From 1986 there was a T-bar version with a removable roof section. In Japan, there was an even more exciting 145bhp supercharged model, but that was not imported to Europe because it would only run on unleaded fuel. It was sold in North America however, and there was a rather dull single-cam model for the home market.

The original MR2 has inspired two more generations of mid-engine Toyotas - and indeed Britain's mid-engine MGF — and looks set to become a sports car classic of the next century.
