The Triumph brand could be described as the BMW of the British car industry, since its strength lay in creating high-quality saloons (sedans) and sport scars with appeal for the enthusiastic driver. No other car summed this up so well as the Dolomite Sprint.

It was the engine that set the Sprint apart from most other British saloons of the 1970s; 16-valve technology was unusual in 1973, and Triumph's overhead-cam unit pioneered 16V technology two decades before it became de rigueur. The engine was simple, retaining a single chain-driven camshaft — and the design was so clever that it won a Design Council Award in 1974.

Certainly the engine was punchy and effective: 0—60mph (0—96kph) in under nine seconds was blistering for a saloon car in 1973, and embarrassed many so-called sports cars such as the MGB. The parent company, British Leyland, was keen to promote its sporting image and entered it for many races; a Sprint won the British Saloon Car Championships of 1975 and 1978, and many rallying successes were also scored.

The four-speed gearbox was derived from the TR6 and could be had with optional overdrive (standard from 1975). Alternatively, you could choose an automatic (which was very rare, with only 1,634 built). Other significant changes over the standard-issue Toledo/Dolomite were larger brakes, twin headlamps, a vinyl roof, front spoiler and alloy wheels (the first time any British production car had boasted these as standard).

The Dolomite Sprint had a rounded character. It was rapid and urgent when pressed, yet refined and relaxed when cruising in overdrive top. The handling was sharp at all times, mild under steer transferring into power overseer if you provoked the car around bends.
The character of the interior was typically British: a full-width wood dashboard, hard-wearing trim and a profusion of traditional gauges.
Overheating, head gasket problems and poor-quality control marred an otherwise brilliant car. Also, it was poorly timed, being launched just as the Arab-Israeli conflict forced petrol shortages in Britain, and thirsty cars like the Dolomite Sprint fell out of favor.

An interesting Dolly Sprint variant was the 1975 Panther Rio built by a British specialist. This was a real mini-Rolls-Royce with hand-beaten replacement panels and a leather-and-walnut luxury interior. However, at three times the price of the Dolomite Sprint, only a handful was ever made.

When the Dolomite left production in 1980 that was sadly the end of the line for old-style Triumphs, and on the death of the model the Canley and Speke plants that had made it were closed. The following year the Honda-based Acclaim scotched any remaining pride in the marque, and it died three years later.
