Having relied on the rear-engine Beetle and various derivatives for four decades, Volkswagen underwent a complete revolution in the 1970s. It followed the drive, completely renewing its model range and revitalizing its prospects.

The first of the new general ion was the 1973 Passat, the most significant was the 1974 Golf, but the best was the Scirocco, launched two months before the Golf. The Scirocco was developed alongside the Golf and shared many common elements: platform, power trains, suspension and so on. Yet the Scirocco had style, and it also had clarity of purpose as an enjoyable coupe.

Italy's Giugiaro did a superb design job according to the folded-paper school of design. The shape was crisp, taut and light, and tile rising glass line was utterly distinctive. For Volkswagen, the Scirocco was a specialist car, so it asked Stuttgart-based firm Karmann to build it. There was a large range of models, starting with lowly 1100 and L300 versions (though these were not widely exported). Far more satisfying were the larger- engine 1500 and 1600, but the best of all were the models powered by the 110 bhp Golf C71T engine. These were variously badged GLI, GTI and Storm and became minor icons of performance motoring, not surprisingly wall) a top speed of 114inpli (183kph) and a 0-60mph (0-96 kph) time of 8.9 seconds. The car Scirocco was an even better handling car than the Golf.

Automatic transmission was optional on all but the base models and the GTI engine versions. Four-speed manual was standard, although the very last110 bhp models got five speeds as standard. In 1981 an all-new Seirocco was launched, although to many it was a retrograde step. It had a blander profile, disappointing ride and handling.

Officially the 1989 Con-ado was not a replacement for the Scirocco, which was perhaps auspicious because it was a far better car in all respects. The shape returned to the sharp, compact purposefulness of the original Scirocco, but it was underneath where the most impressive work had been done.

Put simply, the Gun-ado bad one of the best front-wheel-drive chassis ever made. Neither the standard 136 bhp1.8-litre engine nor the supercharged 160 bhp G60 engine did it justice; drivers had to wait until 1992 VR6, with its blistering 190blip 2.8-litre V-six engine, to exploit the chassis to the full: it was fluid, composed, controlled and extremely quick. By the time Corrado production finished in 1995, VW had made half a million.
