The Volkswagen Beetle, born out of Adolf Hitler's desire to provide low-cost motoring for the masses, needs little introduction. Its rounded shape and air-cooled throb are familiar around the world. Although the last German-built cars came out of the Wolfsburg factory, Lower Saxony, in 1978, the model is still in production in South America. Total sales stand at 21 million (it overtook the Model T's 15 million in the early 70s), a figure unlikely to be beaten.

Ferdinand Porsche designed the original rear-engine, air-cooled design, although very few were actually built before 1939. Production started again in 1945 with a very basically specified 1100 cc model with a non-synchromesh gearbox, cable brakes and very little bright work. In America, the model started a small-car revolution as millions of drivers, looking for a cheap second car; fell in love with the Beetle's good engineering, practicality and economy.

The size of the flat-four pushrod engine grew from 1131 to 1200cc in the50s, and the range expanded with the pretty Karmann Ghia sports models and a cabriolet with its pram-like hood.
Calls for a faster, more modern-driving Beetle were answered in the mid 60s with the 1300 and 1500 models, which gained an all-synchromesh box and could be had with disc brakes and even a semi-automatic transmission. Ultimately, however, VW's reliance on one basic model had a serious effect on sales in the later part of the decade. Buyers began to tire of the noisy, slow Beetle. The 1961 1500 amounted to nothing more than a dressed-up version of the original car, and even the big four- door 411 with its fuel injection didn't fool many buyers: under the skin it was still pure Beetle.

Salvation for VW arrived in the form of the water-cooled, front-engine Golf" in 1974, a benchmark for front-wheel- drive hatchbacks two decades ago, though the Wolfsburg-made Beetles continued until 1977. Today, the Beetle is a cult machine and the older cars, particularly the split window" model from the early 50s, command high prices, while the 60s and 70s models are still plentiful and cheap.
